Las Palmas de Gran Canaria the ideal winter destination

23 February 2022

The prestigious publication Forbes values the city for its architecture, its cosmopolitan character and highlights Triana, Vegueta, the CAAM, Las Canteras and the Hotel Santa Catalina.

When in 2016 Trip Advisor designated Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as Europe’s top emerging destination it wasn’t exactly ‘decorating’ the city as a new pilgrimage site in the competitive tourism sector. With this distinction, decided on the basis of the opinions of a large community of traveling users, the capital of Gran Canaria was reaffirming its historic recovery as an urban destination with a brilliant past. A distinctive bias that has accompanied it since then in the sector, as a city with a wide presence in specialized media and headers of global dimension.

The latest of these has been Forbes magazine, which in an extensive article demands greater recognition for the city and stresses that it is an attractive corner on the map where you can find much more than sun and beach in the coldest months of the year in this half of the planet.

The article, signed by Isabelle Kriger, with the provocative headline ‘Spain’s most underrated city for a winter getaway,’ Forbes notes that “reminiscent of a Mediterranean port city with a North African flavor, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canary Islands. With a mix of modernist, Bauhaus and Spanish colonial architecture, sandy beaches and winter daytime temperatures often reaching twenty degrees, there is no better time to go.”

A presentation to which Kriger adds the different charms of the city, its cosmopolitan character, Triana and Vegueta, museums such as the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) or the Hotel Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel), without overlooking, of course, the beach of Las Canteras.

The article, which is accompanied by photos of Las Canteras and the Plaza de Santa Ana, also mentions the Cathedral as a point of interest in the capital of Gran Canaria. The virtues of the Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, an establishment whose management was awarded by the municipal society Hotel Santa Catalina to the Barceló group, are also highlighted. In fact, Forbes highlights the hotel as an ideal place to stay and eat in this winter getaway in the capital of Gran Canaria, with its allusion to the prestigious Poems by Hermanos Padrón.

However, in the gastronomic section, Forbes also recommends establishments such as Qué Leche, Tasca Siete Viejas and Hoock, either to taste signature cuisine, savor traditional island cuisine or delve into urban and mixed cuisine.
